Tick Born Encephalitis

The spring has arrived even though this week or the next the weather won't be that sunny, there were already some sunny days! we are writing to remind you all of the Tick Borne Encephalitis! It is an endemic disease in the region of Bohemia. Pilsen and in particularly some of it's parks are well known places where it occurs. There is a vaccine and it prevents/attenuates this viral disease. It is not curable and the effects can be devastating in case of infection + non-immunized individual. It is a risk not worth taking...

ISMAP - Surgery Wokshop

On 30th April the ISMAP organized its first workshop of surgery.

This event was possible not only by the motivation and commitment of its Organizing Committee but mainly by the availability, friendliness and attention of the Lochotin Hospital’s Department of Surgery.

It was a very full evening, which promoted the scientific and academic knowledge of the 30 students involved. The introduction came from Professor Jiris Valenta who with his high knowledge and experience, known by all, gave us an interesting and enjoyable journey through the History of Surgery, from the beginnings to modern times. Then it was up to Dr. Molacek, with his typical energy, to remember the basics of science and art of surgery, and at the end focused on the particle component, sutures and laparoscopic.

The afternoon was already halfway through when the class of 30 students was divided,half went to the seminar room of the Department assisted by Dr. Smid where the students practiced various types of sutures, which will be very useful in the early future. Meanwhile, in another room between fascination and enthusiasm, as if it was a video game for a child, the other half was focused to find the dimensions and coordinate their movements on the laparoscopy apparatus.

The night had already embraced the day when the workshop ended, I was sure of overall satisfaction of the participants, but was also sure to open the way for new events to take place. The ISMAP will certainly promote more initiatives and we expect the interest and participation of all students, but also the best interests of the Faculty and its Departments.

Liberation festival 1-6 May

Every year at this time, starts the annual Liberation festival in Plzen.

It was sixty years ago on the 18th April 1945, that General George Patton's 3rd Army entered Czechoslovakia, liberating Western Bohemia from six years of Nazi-German occupation. American tanks appeared on the streets of Plzen from eight o'clock on the morning of Sunday 6 May, to be greeted with enthusiasm by the people.

Since 1990 the tradition has grown up. People from all over the world come to Plzen to meet brave American veterans and to celebrate with music, dancing and the known Pilsner beer.

So if you see people dressed in military clothes and tanks by the street, don’t get scared, instead join the celebration with dancing and drinking.

Charles University in Prague

Things you might not know about Charles University in Prague.

Maybe not all of you know but Charles University is one of the oldest universities in Europe.

Founded in 1347, it was also the first university in the Roman Empire and in central Europe.

The establishment of the university in Prague was inspired by Charles of Luxemburg. In 1347, Charles of Luxemburg and the Pope, who was an important ally, issued the establishement of the University.

In 1348 Charles, King of Bohemia, gave to the established university privileges and immunities fom the secular power. But it wasn't until 1349 that the university opened.

During 1882-1945 the university was divided into German and Czech parts. In the German University one of the many notable academics was Albert Einstein, in Theoretical Physics.

The seal of Charles University shows its protector, Emperor Charles IV, whit his coat of arms as King of the Romans and King of Bohemia, kneeling in front of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. It is surrounded by the inscription, Sigillum Universitatis Scolarium Studii Pragensis (Seal of the Prague academia)

But is today an international organization that is located in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.

MSF provides aid in nearly 60 countries, more than 27,000 committed individuals representing dozens of nationalities. These individuals providing assistance to people caught in crises around the world. They are doctors, nurses, logistics experts, administrators, epidemiologists, laboratory technicians, mental health professionals, and others who work together in accordance with MSF's guiding principles of humanitarian action and medical ethics.

MSF rejects the idea that poor countries deserve third-rate medical care and strives to provide high-quality care to patients and to improve the organization's practices. And works hard to lower the price of HIV/AIDS treatment and also stimulated research and development for medicines to treat diseases like malaria.

The organization is committed to bringing quality medical care to people caught in crisis regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.

In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Recipe for baked potato with cold chicken curry mixture

Recipe for baked potato with cold chicken curry mixture:

Ingredient: for 4 people
2 chicken file
1 apple
½ leek
yellow curry
3 dl crème fresh
4 big baking potatoes

First boil the chicken with salt, pepper and some limejuice. When done, chop it in small pieces in a bowl, then peel the apple and take the leek and chop them also in small pieces and put them in the bowl together with the crème fresh and add the curry till you get a nice and yellow colour.
Put the potatoes in the microwave for 3 min on one side and then turn them and 3 more minutes. Now make a cut in the middle of the potato and put the curry mix in it.
Enjoy your meal!

Recipe for swedish "smulpaj"

Recipe for Swedish ”Smulpaj”

Ingredient:

9 dl of porridge oats
200 g butter
2 ½ dl sugar
1 bag of frozen berries (any kind u like)
Oven: 170C

First you mix the 9 dl of porridge oats with 200 g and butter and 2 dl of sugar
in a big bowl. Put it in the fridge for 30 min.

After 30 min in fridge the mixture should be hard. Then put 2/3 of the mixture in
a form (round if u have) and put it in the oven for 10-15 min until you see a golden
colour. Then take it out and pure the berries on the mixture and pure ½ dl sugar on
top and then put the form back in the oven for 10 min.
Last step is to take it out and put the rest 1/3 of the mixture on top and back in the
Oven for 10-15 min until you can see the golden colour.

So now it is ready to serve, Enjoy!

PS: To this “smulpaj” a vanillasouce would taste good. Try it, you can buy the
ready powder from Kaufland and mix it with milk.

On Saturday 17th Ziriab gives a concert in andel. This trio is made up of musicians from Syria and Lebanon and they play their own traditional Arabic songs.
Sunday’s final farewell to festival will become really worth it, from 4pm you will enjoy a real Arabian bazaar, exhibition travel books and the final band of lectures – all this in Town Hall.

Plzen panthers played there debut championship which was the 'bohemian cup 2010' in january,and were the champions beating ECP(english college prague) and brno.

the are currently playing the winter cricket league and are the semifinals which is supposed to be played on the 27th march saturday 2010.

The plzen panthers playing first time ever have surprised every other well established teams playing the winters league for over 7 years now,by there sheer determination and abundant talent.
plzen panthers playing first time in this tournament are the first team to have beaten every other team in the winter league except for one team...the last 5 year champions PCC(prague cricket club).But that shackle might break very soon as plzen panthers will most likely play the PCC in the finals on the 27th of march 2010,which is in less than a week time.So lets keep our fingers crossed for the plzen panthers,and lets hope our boys beat PCC and bring the cup home.

Strejcova škola jazyků

Strejcova škola jazyků offers private lessons of Czech for foreigners under the leadership of professional teachers, who communicate in English and German. The hour and day of your lesson depends on personal arrangement. The teachers use various types of textbooks and you either get copies or buy your own book. Students usually take one or two 90 min. lessons a week, but there are other alternatives as well. The prices differ and depend mostly on the size of a group and amount of lessons paid. General rule: more hours a week - better price, more students in a group - lower price per person. Individual lesson for a single student (90 min.) costs 599.-, for 2 students 675.- (337.-/person), for 3 and more students 750.- (250.- and less per person). The payments are made in advance and the minimum amount of lessons to pay for is 10.

If you want to study other languages, you can. We also teach Spanish, French, English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic. The prices are the same.

As the month of December seemed to grow in length, so did our desire to return home to our families. December is the month of Christmas, when Christians all over the world join with their families to celebrate the birth of Jesus, who though born in a modest stable far removed in time and space from a modern maternity ward, became a king, though not in the world into which he hadbeen born. It was during this same month, in 2007, that through the efforts and dedication of a group of former students, physicians today, and senior students, International Student Medical Association in Plzen

- ISMAP had its own modest birth. Even though the founders provided for the representation of foreign students, it is the responsibility of each of us to build our own bridge

between ourselves and the university. We who have now been entrusted with the leadership of ISMAP, intend to not only do our best to fulfill the original goals of our organization, but

to also encourage better cultural understanding between the diverse body of foreign students and the people of the country in which we prepare ourselves to become doctors. It is our hope that by fostering better understanding between individuals from different cultures we can help to create a world without borders and open to peaceful co-existence. To this end we call upon our entire community-faculty and staff, workers and friends to dedicate themselves to creating those beneficial ties between foreign and domestic students. By leaning from one another, and by working in harmony, we can improve the quality of our scientific and academic work and further enhance the reputation and standing of our University

As you all know we had our first official party as the new ismap "A Night with the Stars", and it was a major success. We had about 250 people and great music thanks to our two Dj's Petros and Hoe Town. Thank you to all the students that came and we hope you had a great time!

pilsen film club

From the group’s name this might sound bit massive but the truth is there’s no actual film club in our faculty. This is just a future "wannabe" project (if we can call it a project). The idea is to gather here and there (let’s say about once per two/three weeks) in some lecture hall in the faculty and have screenings there using their projectors. Film genres can be from motion pictures to indie documentaries. We came in contact with people from the faculty and they agreed that we can do that in the SAF building (czech lang. classes) as long as we get to set up specific dates and times that will suit both students and the faculty.

Through this group you can keep updated on the latest news and information regarding the club (such as dates, movie listing, changes in timetable etc.)
